Mid-Year Wrap Up

Technically it’s not the middle of the year anymore, but I’m moving shortly and I am preferring binge watching to binge reading. As I’m a little light on the book reviews, I thought I’d take a look backwards and see what has happened on this blog since 2018 began.

First book of 2018:

I can remember this easily because it was January 1st that I read Wonder by Emma Donoghue. Really, it was a good week, I read Wonder, Lost Boy and Good Omens in the first week of the month!

Books read in 2018:

I may not be a huge fan of Goodreads for TBR listing, but it is highly useful for telling me what I have read this calendar year. Apparently it’s 4. I started of the year incredibly strongly, but in June and July I was reading about one book a week so if this were a line graph of reading productivity, it would have fallen sharply once I was back from the US.

Favourite book of 2018:

I think that I’ve read some really, really good books this year! So I’ve had to pick a selection, but if I really had to pick an absolute favourite of the list below, I would have to pick the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Other notable mentions to Christina Henry’s Lost Boy, and Good Omens.

Least favourite of 2018:

Boy have I read some awful books this year. I think the absolute worst was Eragon, but I was also severely disappointed by the Penelopiad and Outlander.

A book that surprised me:

This would have to be…Amazons I think. Honestly, I was surprised because I’m not really a big non-fiction reader, but I really did enjoy John Man’s history of warrior women. Other notable mentions to Everless, because I wasn’t expecting much at all, and it truly did surprise me!

Favourite post of 2018:

I’m picking two, and these are my New York posts! I had so much fun writing them, and picking pictures and reliving memories and I just really loved those posts.

What am I looking forward to on the slippery slope to 2019?

Next week, I’m going to an event at my local Waterstones, In conversation with Becky Chambers on the release of Records of a Spaceborn Few, so I need to quickly re-read angry planet and actually read a closed and common orbit. I’m looking forward to all this.

V.E.Schwab has just debuted her comic Steel Prince, based on the King in the Shades of Magic trilogy – I’m excited about that, and the inevitable trip to Forbidden Planet to find it 🙂

It’s not bookish, but THE DOCTOR WHO TRAILER HAS BEEN RELEASED AND I AM SO DAMN EXCITED. And it comes out around my birthday so that’s an awesome birthday present. I really want to listen to the audio book ‘ the diary of River Song’ but it’s about thirty quid per volume and er that’s expensive.

In other non-bookish news, Lego have restarted the Harry Potter Lego sets! They’re being released on the 1st August and include the Great Hall, the Hogwarts express and Newt Scamander’s suitcase. Alas I do not have the space, but it is fun to know.

Onwards my friends!
